The nineteen seventies may become known as the Decade of The Environment. Increasingly attention is being focused on man's impact on the physical environment and also on the environment that he creates for himself with his own structures, and more especially his cities. Interest in the settlement pattern is becoming far more intense and widespread than it was even a few years ago. Geographer must welcome this tremendous impetus that is being brought to bear on their own traditional fields, and can reasonably be expected to respond by bringing to a wider audience collections and examples of the work that they have themselves been engaged upon. This volume is part of such a response.
