The Design of Foundations for Buildings

Beginning with the pioneer efforts of Terzaghi and other in the 1920s and 1930s, the design of foundations has become a highly developed field of specialization. An enormous amount of analutical and experimental work has been done. Nevertheless, foundation design, at least insofar as the action of the soil is concerned, remains a field in which experience and judgment are the primary determinants.
