The recent development of heavy vibratory rollers capable of compacting rockfill has produced the most significant change in placement procedures in the construction of earth and rockfill dams since the introduction of the sheepsfoot roller for the compaction of earthen core materials. Before the initiation of vibratory compaction of rockfill in layers not exceeding a few feet in thickness, it was general practice to place rockfill by dumping and sluicing in 30 to 40-ft lifts.
